POPE John Campbell

Australian Army PoW Born Katanning WA 11 March 1918 Died 26 September 2021

Service No: WX7421.  Australian Imperial Forces. 2/28 Infantry Battalion Tobruk, attack on the Salient. He as taken Prisoner of War 1941 at Benghazi and transported across the Mediterranean in Nepunia to Taranto.  He survived the torpedoing of Nino Bixio and was taken to Capua (Naples) and finally to PG 57 Udine. On Italy’s collapse, he was taken to Austria at a location close to where the Sound of Music was filmed.  In March 1945 he escaped to US Army Lines and was given a car and drove to Paris before being evacuated by air to England. After the war John became a Commonwealth Bank Manager including at the Cottesloe Branch. Brother of Harry Campbell Pope.
