GALLIOTT Ray
Australian Army Born 10 December 1951
On matriculation from Perth Modern School in 1968, Ray successfully applied for enlistment at RMC Duntroon, however, as he was still 16 years of age (being a December birthday boy), he had to get a job for a couple of years. Banking seemed like a good idea (the brass sign said “Open 10 am to 3 pm”!) so began a career with ANZ Bank serving in WA, AHQ Victoria, India, Singapore, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Nepal. After 28 years in ANZ, Ray was headhunted to join Hongkong Bank/HSBC serving time again in India and then Hongkong. A subsequent move to Standard Chartered Bank saw service in Dubai (UAE) and London. In a parallel career, enlistment in 11 RWAR satisfied the military desire. Ray was called up for National Service and, under the scheme rules, was obliged to fulfill 6 years effective CMF service so he applied for OCTU and eventually graduated in Jun 1973 with No. 7 course. Postings included 11RWAR (PL COMD Perth and OC Kalgoorlie Depot 1974-1978), 16 RWAR. 28 RWAR, WAUR, HQ 13 BDE, 5/6 RVR, HQ 4 BDE and operational deployments on CHOGM and Vic Bushfire Assist. After returning home to WA from London and retiring from banking, Ray completed 2 years CFTS at the Regional Training Centre Leeuwin Barracks and then ARes service with 13 BDE retiring from the ADF in December 2016 on reaching CRA. Ray has been Secretary of Highgate sub-branch, a RSL-WA Board Member & Chairman of the Finance Committee, a Director of YMCA-WA, is currently Secretary of the RWAR Regimental Committee, Secretary/Treasurer of the Ex-POW Association – WA & the ANZ Bank Retired Officers’ Club – WA plus The 28th Battalion (Swan Regiment) Association (a co-founder in 1985) and a committee member of the Defence Reserves Association of WA.
