The AWM and CWGC show the rank as Flight Sub-Lieutenant. This was not an actual British rank and likely used by those outside the services to indicate a Sub-Lieutenant in a flying role. The RAF, created on 1 April 1918, has the equivalent rank of Flying Officer.
